.

14) The "Test Center" window will appear. Select "Scan Computer" to start the scanning process.
The scanning process will now take place. This may take up to one hour. If any viruses are found they will automatically be deleted.

I first recommend making some changes to your AVG settings so that it will scan all files and not just the executable files like most anti-virus programs do. Next, I also recommend making changes to which files you are allowed to see on your computer, this way no files will normally be hidden from you when you look for them. (check the procedure given lower down).

15) First lets make a few changes to your AVG so it can scan all files instead of just executable files.
RIGHT CLICK the icon in the taskbar and select Launch avg test center.
From the AVG Test Center
1. Open the Test menu at the top of the window.
2. Select "Complete Test Settings"

16) In the File Extentions area, select "Scan all files", click the OK
SET IT JUST LIKE THIS!!!!!!!!!! Then click
“ OK”.

17) Then go back to the start part and do this:

18) and set the checks like this.
then click the “OK”

NOTE here…… now is when there is the part for windows XP to “show all hidden files", if you have'nt done that already.
-Double click My Computer on the desktop
-Select TOOLS
-Click on FILE OPTIONS
-Tab VIEW
-Under the file Hidden Files and Folders, check " Show hidden files and folders"
-Then below, UNcheck "Hide extensions for known file types"
-and also UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files".

19) to do a manual scan every few days, right click the avg icon in the taskbar and select LAUNCH AVG CENTER

20) next click the button to start the scan !

21) give it time! Note bottom right corner and see what it took. Was 13 min 14 sec to
scan my computer and you might have a lot more on your system !!!!!! While
scanning you will see the files it is scanning to the left of the "stop"
button and it will go through all files on all drives !
When it finishes up it will show that small window saying "no virus found"
if not it will have a small red window with what it found !

22) right click the avg icon and select "LAUNCH AVG TEST CENTER"

23) click "scheduler" and that opens up a new window

24) click once to highlight the "UPDATE PLAN IN BASIC MODE" (#1)
then click "EDIT SCHEDULE" #2

25) you will now see this window and use the up or down arrow in the time window,
to scroll to a time when you are usually online with the computer on.
Then click "OK"
and it will do that time the next time and forever till you change it !

26) now lets disable the auto scan part.
Click to highlight the TEST PLAN IN BASIC MODE then click EDIT SCHEDULE

27) On the next window, UNcheck PERIODICALLY START SCHEDULED ANTI-VIRUS TEST then click OK

This and That
If the icon in the taskbar is gray it usually means that you need a
update( that can happen when their server is busy and it could not get it ,
just try a manual update ( will come in a bit) later, sometimes it takes
several hours to get the update !
