I WILL KEEP SUPPORTING WINDOWS HERE

Most of you know I worked on fighting the war against malware for several years and that is why I started this site. and after a bit of time i figured that the major trouble was Micro$oft and their way of doing things. constant updates to updates, all the flaws in Internet Explorer and now the creation of windows Vista ( or as i like to call it "windows ME part 2"). Everyone thinks that since windows is the majority of the net then that is why it is always targeted...FALSE, it is their operating system ! Look at the security alerts in CERT and you will find that they have the most flaws and make it easy to get attacked..

About a year ago i descovered Ubuntu, it is a flavor of linux. Defragmentation, virus, and adware are unknown. first of all unix does not know what to do with a EXE. you do all your work as a "user" not as "root", what that means is you cannot get your kernal corrupted and would have to say "yes please send me a virus or adware, and then it can go into your home folder and not root. so much for tech stuff. It uses a GUI interface so it is close to the windows style with shortucts and such. Ubuntu is free and all the programs are free ! did that get your attention? improvements in programs and the operating system are installed easly, no doing just windows then looking for updates for your favorite program. you can download it for free to a cd and run a "live cd" and use it and it only lives in the computer's memory and cd. so you can check out the features and when you remove the disk nothing has happened to your computer. I use firefox and thunderbird, and a great program called open office, and i even have a open source of quickends. It will run on any computer with 256 meg of memory and if you have a old win98 sitting in the closet and about 128 meg ,well you can use a alternate source and install Ubuntu on it and see if you like it. and you can easly dual boot so you have windows and Ubuntu and you decide who to boot on startup. and they have a great support forum. so just click the logo below and see what i am talking about ;-D

IE and OE settings
version française français ici

This will make Internet Explorer and Outlook Express safe for the web. Remember Windows makes it easy, not safe! You will get system popups because Windows "knows what is best for you" so you might loosen up the settings a bit, but loosen up security at the same time.

XP settings
version française français ici

This will make XP play nice. Some are security and others are basic tweaks and make it run a little faster and stop some of the annoyances.

Newbie and Oldie's list

This is the true "Gold Mine". A nice list and info on several programs to make the internet safer. FREE programs. All on this list are safe and work on your system.
You need:
1. firewall... two on the list(free)
2. anti-virus... two on the list (free)
3. anti spyware... several. I recommend: Ad-Aware, Spyblaster, IE-Spyad, and others but if you install these 3 and keep them current you are really secure. But remember if you manually download, you can get things you don't want ;-)
4. then, info and list on Safe Mode, Cookie managers, Popup stoppers, checking out firewalls, and other goodies...
5.Anti-Spyware gone bad...a rogue list

How did I get infected?.... an article by TonyK
