The Phantom's Finds

Security Garden
what can i say...this is "the Rose" site ;-) ok maybe not everyone on the web knows Corrine, but if you have anything to do with security, protection, and microsoft you do ! a 5 star blog with great info and some good "how too's" and while you are there read how to update your Sun Java as it probably needs it ;~D

ubuntu
Feel like trying something different? not a expert on linux and don't understand the "command line thing"? all is FREE, you can have them mail a cd to you or you can download it ! ( 700meg) you can use the cd to be a "live cd" and it will write NOTHING to your system and run in memory and the cd ! so you can try this and see if you like this version of linux. just put the cd in your player and boot the system and off you go , you are using linux, and you can see what types of programs are available , it has open office, firefox, and a e-mail program. i have been using a few versions of linux and this is a keeper, i have it on my old box now ! NOTE if you get online with a modem it probably won't get online for you if you have a standard "winmodem" or "soft modem". so i just put a cheap external modem and having a lot of fun ! i used a free anti-virus ( to keep my windows buddies safe), and have everything that a typical windows system has but one big difference ....ALL THE SOFTWARE IS FREE so you can try it and see what linux is like and if you like it then great, if not, well now you can say.."i do not like linux because..."

portable apps.com
A portable app is a computer program that you can carry around with you on a portable device and use on any Windows computer. When your USB flash drive, portable hard drive, iPod or other portable device is plugged in, you have access to your software and personal data just as you would on your own PC. And when you unplug, none of your personal data is left behind. It is a computer in your pocket, you can check,send/recieve your POP3 e-mail, browse the web, view and edit word documents, photo edit, and check for viruses all with your thumb drive. and none of the info is left. It is "donationware" so if you have a few $ please donate and we will get more programs !

CCleaner
CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a freeware system optimization tool. That removes unused and temporary files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster, more efficiently and giving you more hard disk space. The best part is that it's fast! (normally taking less that a second to run) and Free. :) (donations accepted). now these are the safe settings I use........
WINDOWS tab...I have all but the ADVANCED checked
APPLICATIONS tab......all checked
ISSUES tab...you are editing the registry, so I do not use this feature, if you know what you are doing, you can have it delete and save a backup if you make a bobo.
with my settings you should not have any troubles (in OPTIONS you can have it save your "good cookies") CCleaner has a support forum for questions

Landzdown forum

A New Site with nice support forums for any computer problem! It is a new site, BUT already some of the "big guns' are already signed up and ready to help! You will find people from all the good support forums are there. I personally would recommend this site for a newbee to an expert for help or ideas. have a computer problem or just want to chat...THIS IS THE PLACE, and also a ASAP recommended site !

Calendar of Updates
This is a nice site, you can see a calendar, and it shows what programs have updated by date! most of the anti-spyware/anti-virus programs are listed there ! I go there in the morning and just before i log off and check. now you have one stop listings for all those programs you have to "check for updates"

CrapWare Count
is a count of the different types of "crapware" and the various domains associated with "crapware" It has good information and definitions and you can see how the JUNK is spreading. It is written by the creator of AGNIS and IE-SPYAD Eric Howels

Make a Xp Password recovery Disk
This very simple thing can save you time, money and loss of hair, all you need is a blank floppy for each login password !

US-CERT ALERTS
ok, you installed all the microsoft patches and had the "intelligent updater" automatically update your
antivirus on wed so you are feeling secure. WRONG, go here and read what is current, and I suggest you sign up for the
"non-technical"e-mail alert. You will get an alert on security bugs, showing the vendor's info, and if no fix ,a possible
workaround or what to look for. Unless you are in the technical part of the business I suggest you subscribe for the
"non-technical" version. it is written in english and not tech talk.

Astronomy Picture of the Day
Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. I have been going here for years, some great "eye candy" and intresting info

Foxfire Info and "how to's"
This is a quick "work in progress" with some good info on firefox, and should help with install and configuring and customizing

list of list
this is a nice list with several different topics, reviews, some free software, and info.it doesn't list every program but most of the good ones, and this is where i discovered "FileZilla" in the FTP area
